Tidbits

Several minor travel tidbits . . .

Forgot to mention that yesterday when I was at Portland International Airport, it turned out that we had two teams of high school cheerleaders on our flight to LA. First time I've ever been in an airport watching a bunch of girls do a 3-high pyramid and basket catches.

This morning here in DC the weather was just perfect. Around noon, it was probably sixty degrees. My meeting was at 1:00 so I decided to go for a walk. My hotel is about four blocks from the Capitol so I went over there. It was interesting to see people from all countries, languages and ethnicities taking pictures of the landmarks. Over and over I saw dozens of pigeons swoop down and around people; people who began shrieking as they flew by their heads. I thought it would have been great fun to walk around with a bag full of bread crumbs and quietly toss them on the ground behind people, then watch as the birds flew directly at them to get the bread.

One very cute thing that I saw while walking around the Capitol was a grandmother taking a photograph of one of the mounted police officers holding her grandchild's Flat Stanley. If you don't know what Flat Stanley is, you probably haven't had an elementary school student living in your home in the last decade, but I have to think that having your Flat Stanley's picture taken with a mounted policeman would have to be one of coolest photos in your classroom.

Tonight, as I walked to dinner at Union Station, there were probably eight or nine police cars on the street outside the hotel, with crime scene tape spread around. At Union Station, there were another half dozen cop cars and more yellow tape. I never found out what had happened either place but thought to myself "I just saw more police cars in a three block area than we have in all of Klamath County."

Finally, I ate at B. Smith's restaurant tonight with some of the other NACAC leaders and, for the first time ever, I ordered collard greens. My host told me they were not particularly good collard greens but at least I sampled something new to go with my fried chicken, crabcake and mashed potatoes. Don't tell me I'm not adventuresome, baby.

Man, don't forget that I wanted OUR nephew to have the best-traveled Flat Stanley there was and even took him to Europe in 1990 (so what if he was studying American History; we were trying to expand the horizons!).

I did have to laugh when back in 2001, we were at the Hard Rock Cafe' in Kona, HI and there was a guy with a Flat Stanley that belonged to his boss' son. I offered to take his picture and instead, he thought it would be better to take a picture of ME with Mr. Stanley. Yeah, whatever.
